NYC Test & Trace Corps Announce Nearly 60,000 Pediatric Vaccinations At NYC Schools

December 14, 2021

The NYC Test & Trace Corps announced today that its mobile vaccination clinics have administered over 58,000 pediatric vaccinations to New York City students ages 5 to 11.

Over a quarter of all vaccinated New Yorkers in this age group. Clinics were established at every public elementary school in the City and many charter schools that opted into the program.

Over the course of five weeks, Test & Trace mobile units and clinicians offered both first and second doses to nearly 1,100 City public and charter schools, holding over 2,600 pop-up vaccine clinics while mobilizing the largest school vaccination campaign in the country.

“Each dose of the vaccine is another layer of protection that keeps our students, their families, and communities safe,” said New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter. “Thank you to our healthcare agency partners for their incredible work to get as many shots in arms as possible to keep our babies safe.”

“Our school vaccination campaign has brought life-saving medicines to thousands of schools across New York City, making it as easy as possible for parents to get their children vaccinated from arrival to dismissal,” said Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at New York City Health + Hospitals and NYC Test & Trace Corps Executive Director Dr. Ted Long. “I am grateful for our staff who coordinated this massive achievement which will help ensure New York’s youngest school-age children are protected and can safely enjoy being back in the classroom together.”

Since November 8, the first week of vaccine deployments to City students ages 5 to 11, Test & Trace has administered 58,160 vaccinations to New Yorkers in this age group.

Approximately 27% of the 160,000 vaccinated children in this age group have received a vaccination at their schools through Test & Trace’s mobile program.

The NYC Test & Trace Corps established 2,670 sites over the course of just over month while deploying to every elementary public school in New York City.

This included 1,811 pop-up clinics held on school premises and 859 mobile clinics deployed directly outside of schools.

“Launched just 6 days after the vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds was authorized, this program has brought pediatric vaccines to students at every public elementary school in New York City, making it the largest school COVID-19 vaccine campaign in the country.” said Jacob Watkins, Senior Manager for Mobile Unit Strategy, NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps. “It has been a privilege to help lead this effort to protect our City’s youth, along with our amazing team and in close partnership with our dedicated colleagues at the Department of Education.”

“As a member of the Test & Trace team, I am proud to have helped lead efforts to ensure that nearly 60,000 New York City students were vaccinated within record time,” said Katya Murphy, Senior Manager, NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps. “This huge undertaking was possible through the immense efforts of the DOE and our team who dedicated countless hours to ensure our City’s children are safe. While this is a huge milestone, there is more work to be done and I look forward to working with our partners to ensure all New York City youth are vaccinated in the near future.”

“Our vaccination effort has been about partnership, teamwork and community collaboration from day one,” said Andy Cook, Senior Manager for Mobile Unit Operations, NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps. “This milestone is something we’re very proud of and grateful to accomplish, as it is the result of each of these pieces coming together, all towards serving families and kids across New York City.”

“We at Test & Trace have strived to bring COVID support directly where people need it—whether that be at home, on a street corner, or right inside the schools that young New Yorkers and their families know and trust” said Annie Mabus, Senior Advisor, NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps. “With an incredible and dedicated team, and with the partnership of the Department of Education, we have been able to bring our schools and City that much closer to ending the pandemic for good.”

In addition, the NYC Vaccine Referral Bonus Program has now facilitated nearly 14,000 vaccination referrals from 308 participating organizations affiliated with Parent-Teacher Associations or schools, providing a total of $2.8 million for participating school organizations.

“Our team has been working diligently to attend school vaccination clinics, answer questions from PTAs, host webinars with school communities and continues to work closely with DOE to educate students and families on the safety and effectiveness of the COVID vaccine,” said Sydney Watnick, Field Director, NYC Health + Hospitals Test & Trace Corps. “Along with over 300 PTAs, we have worked to refer 13,000 people for COVID vaccines, helping to make vaccination easy, accessible and financially beneficial for school communities across the City. We are committed to continuing outreach efforts to bring vaccines to every community and having informative conversations across the five boroughs to keep people safe.”

Test & Trace Corps

The Test & Trace Corps is the City’s comprehensive effort to test, trace, and provide support for every case of COVID-19 and every person exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.

Through a partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Test & Trace Corps allows the City to immediately isolate and care for those who test positive for the virus and then rapidly track, assess, and quarantine anyone who may have been exposed.

To help all New Yorkers safely separate at home and monitor their health status, the Take Care pillar of the Test & Trace Corps also offers free hotel rooms with wraparound services for New Yorkers who are unable to safely separate in their own homes.

For those safely separating at home, contact tracers perform daily calls and conduct in-person visits as necessary. These calls allow tracers to gauge the progress of cases, ensure proper compliance with separation protocol, and connect people to more supportive services as necessary.

Today, 98% of all COVID-19 cases and 94% of contacts reported following isolation and quarantine requirements.
