The New York City Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS) is seeking stories of inspiring and empowering women from Harlem to contribute to WomensActivism.NYC.
A permanent archive of stories about women who have positively impacted society. With more than 9,000 stories already archived, DORIS is soliciting 700 additional stories to complete the project with 10,000 stories of inspiring and empowering women.
WomensActivism.NYC is a public, searchable site showcasing brief descriptions of inspiring women from around the world. Diverse entries include sisters, great-grandmothers, celebrities, next-door neighbors, elected officials, teachers, and more. Neighborhood representation is imperative, and it is important that women’s stories from Harlem be included. This collection will be preserved and made available in perpetuity through the Municipal Archives.
“The thousands of people who contributed stories to the WomensActivism.NYC website are, literally, writing women back into history and acknowledging the work of women who have impacted individuals and communities. By adding the story of a woman you admire, you will recognize her and help complete this project,” said Department of Records & Information Services Commissioner Pauline Toole.
DORIS launched the project on Women’s Equality Day in 2015 to celebrate the Women’s Suffrage Centennial. August 26 is recognized nationwide to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Since then, people from around the world have contributed more than 9,000 stories of women who have inspired them including friends, family members, public figures, next-door neighbors, role models, and beyond.
