Harlem Lady Teyana Taylor And McDonald’s Are Putting On A Free Concert In NYC

September 11, 2019

Teyana Taylor’s success as a singer, actor, model, and choreographer has taken the G.O.O.D. Music signee far beyond her hometown of Harlem, New York, but she has never forgotten her roots in Harlem. This is why Taylor has become the first artist to partner with McDonald’s for the Beat of My City music program, a one-of-a-kind live music experience created to celebrate artists and the communities they call home. As part of McDonald’s mission to drive cultural and social impact, the concert series brings artists back to their hometown to put on a free show and give back to a community organization that resonates deeply with them.

You can RSVP to attend Teyana Taylor’s free concert in New York at McDonaldsBeatofMyCity.com. The concert will feature artistic displays representing the city, a local DJ, and free food from McDonald’s.

In addition to putting on a free concert, Taylor will team up with McDonald’s and Genius to contribute to Harlem’s Children’s Aid Dunlevy Milbank Center, a non-profit facility that provides invaluable resources for families and children including after-school programs, athletics, medical services, dance classes, and summer camps. The funding will benefit the creation of new programming and services.

“McDonald’s is a brand that’s always been in my life—pretty hard not to be, right?” said Taylor. “I’ve always had an interest working with [them] in the right context. We started talking a while ago about how their big push was to give back to artists’ communities, from the places artists have come from. When I started discussing Beat of My City with McDonald’s, and I learned the focus was both a charitable component, where I could directly impact Harlem, and put on a free show celebrating New York, where all are welcome, it was a no brainer to make this happen!”

Dating back to her album From a Planet Called Harlem, and continuing through to 2018’s “Rose in Harlem,” Taylor has celebrated her ties to the Uptown Manhattan neighborhood.

Born in Harlem on Dec. 10, 1990, Taylor displayed an affinity for music at a young age. The singer first stepped into a recording booth at age seven and started to appear in front of crowds when she was just nine years old. This led to her entering a number of high profile talent competitions as a child, most notably at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater.

“Growing up in Harlem is like being born onto the stage,” said Taylor. “I was born in the city when hip-hop and R&B were bursting into the mainstream, so I was always surrounded with the sounds of NY legendary artists! There’s so much about growing up in Harlem amongst all these heavy influences so present, but that also allows you to grow into your own person.”

In 2006, Taylor drew attention for her choreography work on Beyoncé’s music video for “Ring the Alarm.” In particular, Pharrell Williams took notice and signed her to his Star Trak Entertainment imprint just a few months later. She broke out with 2008’s “Google Me,” the lead single from From a Planet Called Harlem, which dropped one year later.

After venturing into acting with roles in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming and Madea’s Big Happy Family, Taylor changed her career forever by parlaying an invitation from Kanye West to look over some Balmain fashion pieces into a pair of contributions to his 2010 opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Officially joining West’s G.O.O.D. Music label in 2012, she quickly took advantage of the situation by delivering vocals on the compilation album, Cruel Summer.

Taylor has since released two albums, 2014’s VII and last year’s K.T.S.E.. The latter release includes the aforementioned “Rose in Harlem.”

Taylor’s partnership with McDonald’s lets her continue to pay tribute to her Harlem home and empowers her to truly make an impact on her community for the better.
