Where To Go Sledding In Harlem

January 3, 2014

harlem-sleddingA positive of having a snowstorm Hercules in effect is the abundant sledding it provides in-and-around Harlem. Here are some spots for wintery recreation Friday and this weekend.

Here’s a list of spots where you can hit the slopes this weekend.

Central Park

Just south of Harlem is Pilgrim Hill — which has a long, gently descending slope — is a popular option for many parents and kids. It’s located just north of 72nd Street near Fifth Avenue. For a less crowded place, try Cedar Hill, between 76th and 79th streets near Fifth Avenue.

Morningside Park

Another great sledding spot are the hills of Morningside Park at 120th Street and Morningside Avenue. There are large and small hills leading up to Columbia University that provide where parents ad kids can enjoy the slopes.

Riverside Park

There’s a good sledding spot at Riverside Drive and 103rd Street. For the more daring, you can try your luck at “Suicide Park” at Riverside and 91st Street. Park workers put hay bales in front of trees along Riverside Park where people might sled.

St. Nicholas Park

A long, steep hill in the park divides Harlem from Morningside Heights. You can see the slope right from the entrance to the A/C station at 135th Street.

Inwood Hill Park

There is an expansive hill, and the nearby Indian Road Café has good hot chocolate and food. At Dyckman Street and the Hudson River.
