“NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill’s announcement of various promotions within the Department are encouraging. The changes in policing over the past few years have shown that having a police force that better reflects the population leads to safer city. While leadership at the NYPD does not yet proportionally represent the make-up of the city or the rank-and-file, the promotion of talented women and men of color, including Deputy Chief Nilda Irizarry Hofmann, Inspector Fausto Pichardo and Executive Director Maria Otero, sets the department on a good path to a truly diverse force and builds towards a more robust pipeline.”
