We are excited to announce that American designer B Michael will be a special guest on TCM’s new limited series, Follow The Thread premiering on June 4th, 2022.
B Michael and TCM host Alicia Malone had an in-depth conversation on the films Funny Face and Belle du Jour the conversation focused on designers and their muse a topic near and dear to B Michael inspired by his own two-decade friendship and red-carpet design collaborations with Hollywood royalty Cicely Tyson.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) announced a new original limited series, Follow the Thread, hosted by TCM’s Alicia Malone.
Exploring the synergies between fashion and film, this series will trace their influence across the past, present, and future of our culture.
Presented on TCM, June 4, 2022, and HBO Max, June 17, 2022, Follow the Thread will cover a variety of topics at the intersection of film and fashion, inspired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s new exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion.
Follow the Thread will feature in-depth industry conversations with experts including Tim Gunn; designers Bob Mackie, Zac Posen, Jeremy Scott, and B Michael; costume designers Sandy Powell, Zaldy, Isis Mussenden, Mark Bridges, and Deborah Nadoolman Landis; film and fashion historians Kimberly Truhler and Raissa Bretaña; and The Met’s Andrew Bolton (Wendy Yu Curator of The Costume Institute) and Sylvia Yount (Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator of The American Wing).
“We see fashion inspired by the silver screen gracing red carpets, runways, and city streets every day,” said Pola Changnon, general manager of TCM. “Fashion is yet another way for our fans to join these colorful worlds and show their passion for their favorite films, which is on display in Follow the Thread.”
Follow the Thread is in collaboration with The Met’s new exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, with episodes shot on site.
The exhibition features approximately 100 examples of men’s and women’s dresses dating from the 19th to the mid-late 20th century that reveals unfinished stories about American fashion.
As part of the exhibition, nine film directors have created fictional concepts, or “freeze frames,” that share new perspectives on American fashion through their own distinct aesthetics.
The directors are Radha Blank, Janicza Bravo, Sofia Coppola, Julie Dash, Tom Ford, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, Autumn de Wilde, and Chloé Zhao.
TCM programming kicks off on its linear channel Saturday, June 4, 2022, and on HBO Max Friday, June 17, 2022, with more than 70 films featured in the series including:

B Michael
B Michael is a co-founder, fashion designer, and creative director of B Michael Global. Presently, he is the chief designer for the brand’s couture and ready-to-wear designer collections.
B Michael received acclaim designing the costumes for Whitney Houston collaborating with Ruth Carter for Whitney’s last film, “Sparkle”, and ballet costumes for the Joffrey Ballet’s premiere of “Windy Sands” and received numerous commissions to design for film and television.
B Michael started his early career as a millinery (Hat) designer for the hit TV show “Dynasty” and later worked as a millinery designer for Louis Feraud of Paris and Oscar de la Renta. B Michael is a member of the Council of the Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and serves on the board of the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Design Visionary Award by the Lighthouse Guild.
B Michael’s collections have garnered appreciative fans including socialites and personalities such as long-time dear friend and muse Cicely Tyson…Valerie Simpson, Phylicia Rashad, Brandy, Beyonce, Nancy Wilson, Susan Fales-Hill, poet laureate Elizabeth Alexander, and Lena Horne among many others.
He has shown his collections in Beijing, Shanghai, and Korea. B Michael’s designer ready-to-wear collection will be available on the brand’s ECommerce website launching in 2023.

In America: An Anthology of Fashion
Now on view through September 5 at The Met, In America: An Anthology of Fashion—the second of a two-part presentation—explores the foundations of American fashion through a series of sartorial displays featuring individual designers and dressmakers who worked in the United States from the 19th to the mid-late 20th century.
The exhibition features approximately 100 examples of men’s and women’s dresses dating from the 19th to the mid-late 20th century that reveals unfinished stories about American fashion.
The garments are presented within the rich atmospheric setting of The Met’s American Wing period rooms, or historical interiors, which encapsulate a curated survey of more than a century of American domestic life and reveal a variety of stories—from the personal to the political, the stylistic to the cultural, and the aesthetic to the ideological.
The complicated social, cultural, and artistic narratives of these spaces amplify and contextualize the exhibition’s key themes—the inception of an identifiable American style, and the emergence of the named designer, who is recognized for distinct artistic vision.
Inspired by the vision of The Costume Institute and American Wing curators, nine film directors have created fictional cinematic vignettes, or “freeze frames,” within each room, imparting new perspectives on American fashion and highlighting the directors’ singular aesthetics.
Directors contributing to the exhibition are Radha Blank, Janicza Bravo, Sofia Coppola, Julie Dash, Tom Ford, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, Autumn de Wilde, and Chloé Zhao.
These mise-en-scènes reveal the role of dress in shaping the diverse nature of American identities and explore the layered histories of the rooms’ settings.
