The City And Deloitte Team For Small Business Recovery Playbook From Harlem To Hollis

February 18, 2021

NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Jonnel Doris announced new tools to aid in small business recovery.

As part of the City’s commitment to spur economic growth, SBS is releasing The New Normal: Adapting Your Small Business Playbook, a handbook filled with tools, technologies, and strategies to help entrepreneurs stabilize their business, protect their staff and customers, and build and grow beyond the pandemic.

In conjunction with the playbook release, SBS will offer a multi-session workshop series run by business experts.

Each session will cover topics from the playbook and will be accompanied by virtual classroom instruction and take-home exercises for business owners to maximize their learnings.

“Public-private partnership is going to lead the way toward small business recovery and I am thrilled that Deloitte has teamed with us to help keep the economic engine of our City running,” said Jonnel Doris, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services. “The playbook provides step by step instructions and practical tips to help bring back NYC’s 240,000 small businesses.”

As the effects of the virus continue to make their way through the small business community, a manual to reconstruction is now more important than ever. To create this handbook, the City worked with Deloitte on a pro bono basis to connect small business owners to critical resources and guidance.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood and character of any city, and nowhere is that more true than New York City, where we are proud to have our headquarters,” said David Buck, a principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP. “We are grateful to add our perspective and experience to assist SBS in their goal to safely get small businesses back to innovating, creating jobs, and continuing their critical role in the social fabric of neighborhoods across the City.”

The report highlights three key areas with a real-time example to illustrate the execution of the proposed strategies.

Respond equips business owners with the tools to reopen their businesses safely, protecting themselves, their employees, clients, and establishment.

It also provides unique and innovative ways of using technology to better serve its customers.

Recover helps entrepreneurs creatively learn and adapt to the ever-changing business landscape, presenting resources for businesses to diversify their revenue stream, re-evaluate their financial management and plan for future opportunities. These tools are designed to help build stronger, more resilient businesses.

Finally, thrive prepares business owners for the future, helping them plan the next steps for their establishments.

Whether it’s updating a business model or marketing to new customers, this section gives information on how business owners can succeed in the new normal.

Each of the sections above are accompanied by an interactive manual where business owners can walk through worksheets that will better equip their business to build resilience and grow into a post-COVID era.

Registration is now open for our first workshop series, visit nycsmallbizcourses.eventbrite.com and search for “The New Normal”. Business owners interested in using the full playbook can visit nyc.gov/covid19biz.
