The COVID Crisis: Harlem Rep. Espaillat Urges Cable Companies To Maintain Service

May 12, 2020

Representative Adriano Espaillat in Harlem released the following statement in association to a letter he sent to the chief executive officers of the four primary cable providers in New York. In the letter addressed to Verizon, AT&T, Charter, and Altice USA, Inc., Rep. Espaillat urges the respective CEOs to both fully adopt the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) “Keep America Connected” pledge and guarantee that they will not cut service to customers who are unable to pay due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“As we have seen in recent weeks, Americans are becoming restless and are increasingly breaking from social distancing guidelines, risking further transmission of COVID-19,” said Rep. Espaillat. “In part, we are witnessing this due to unprecedented cable and internet subscription cancellations and service terminations. Constituents in my district, particularly senior citizens have expressed their restlessness and loneliness after having their cable and internet cut off due to their inability to pay.

“Because of this virus’ transmissibility and our shared responsibility to social distance, internet and cable service have become essential to the entire public’s mental health, ability to communicate with loved ones and first responders, access to pertinent health information, and telework. For millions of employees and parents around the country, access to cable and internet service is vital for their ability to telework and homeschool their children.

“Considering the community-first spirit evoked by this pandemic, and that cable and internet service has become requisite for millions of American families’ mental, physical and financial health, I believe these multi-billion-dollar cable corporations should immediately freeze all service discontinuation due to financial hardship, and instead implement payment plans. Furthermore, I believe that such an action would be in the long-term financial interest of these corporations, as it will discourage current customers from proactively canceling services they cannot afford in the immediate future.”

First elected to Congress in 2016, Rep. Espaillat is serving his first term in Congress where he serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the House Select Committee on Small Business. He is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and serves in a leadership role as CHC Freshman Representative to the Democratic Caucus. He is also chairman of the CHC Task Force for Transportation, Infrastructure and Housing. Rep. Espaillat’s Congressional District includes Harlem, East Harlem, northern Manhattan and the north-west Bronx. To find out more about Rep. Espaillat, visit online at https://espaillat.house.gov/
