The Announcement Of The Next Phase Of The Harlem African Burial Ground Project And Educational Initiative

In East Harlem on Tuesday, the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative (HABGI) will convene at the 126th Street Bus Depot.

The purpose of this gathering is to unveil a forthcoming stage of archaeological exploration within the historical expanse of the Harlem African Burial Ground. Additionally, an announcement will be made regarding the initiation of a Request for Proposal (RFP) aimed at forming an education and engagement team. This team will play a pivotal role in fostering awareness and understanding surrounding the Harlem African Burial Ground.

Distinguished figures scheduled to participate in the event include NYCEDC’s President & Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Kimball, alongside the Co-Chairs of the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative, Dr. Patricia A. Singletary and Melissa Mark-Viverito. Joining them are esteemed members Sharon Wilkins, former Deputy Manhattan Borough Historian, Melinda Velez, Council Member Diana Ayala, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and representatives from Community Board 11.

The joint effort of NYCEDC and the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative will be unveiled to announce the upcoming phase of archaeological endeavors centered around the Harlem African Burial Ground. Additionally, the event will mark the launch of a Request for Proposal aimed at assembling an education and engagement team. This team’s mission will revolve around amplifying knowledge and recognition regarding the historical significance of the Harlem African Burial Ground.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm EST. The venue is set at the 126th Street Bus Depot, situated at 2460 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10035.
