EmblemHealth, the New York City health benefits and wellness company, and Harvest Home Farmer’s Market, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to local, farm-fresh produce in low-income neighborhoods, are helping New Yorkers learn to cook and eat healthier by sponsoring “Eating for Good Health” weekly cooking demonstrations at five farmers’ markets in Upper Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The Eating for Good Health cooking demonstrations of healthy dishes will be prepared using the fresh fruits and vegetables available at the farmers’ markets. Attendees will receive free recipe cards, printed in English and Spanish, with nutritional information and step-by-step instructions on preparing each dish. A companion web and mobile app is available at app.harvesthomefm.org and Google Play, and will be coming soon to the iTunes App store.
Maritza Wellington Owens, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Harvest Home Farmer’s Market, says, “EmblemHealth’s support is essential to fulfilling our mission of educating under-served New Yorkers on the health benefits of incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into their diet. The launch of the app, powered by FoodCare Nutrition Insights™, extends these benefits by helping our shoppers manage their personal nutritional needs, add family recipes and build a library of favorite recipes.”
The Harvest Home sponsorship is part of EmblemHealth’s citywide Small Steps campaign to encourage people to take small steps each day toward living healthier. “As the official sponsor of Small Steps, we are bringing useful tools and resources to the heart of the communities we serve,” says David Flemister, director of brand strategy and community marketing at EmblemHealth. “We want to show people how easy it is to eat healthier by learning to cook the fruits and vegetables from the farmer’s market in their neighborhood.”
Information on local farmers’ markets is available on EmblemHealth’s new mobile app, “Small Steps to a Healthier You,” that lets users monitor their health and wellness activities. The app is a great resource for finding healthy resources in the community, and includes a pedometer to help you set fitness goals and earn badges. The “Small Steps to a Healthier You” app is available at www.smallsteps.emblemhealth.com, the iTunes App Store or Google Play.
