Seitu’s World: Louisiana’s Pinettes Brass Band Celebrate Womens History Month

by Seitu Oronde

On Tuesday, March 13, 2023, photojournalist Seitu Oronde was at the Women’s Jazz Festival 2023 for women’s history month at the Schomburg Library in Harlem.

This was a joyous occasion at the Schomburg library celebrating the second edition in honoring women in music, featuring the great Pinettes Brass Band octet from New Orleans.

They performed the marching New Orleans jazz brass band, using songs by The Temptations and other soul groups, in the style of hip hop.

It was unique, different, and very exciting in a standing-room audience, everybody stood up, danced, shouted, and celebrated these fabulous original Pinettes Brass Band from New Orleans.

This band’s philosophy is: “…it’s like gumbo, the mixture of our music is very diverse, like the ingredients used in creating a gumbo.”
