November 27, 2018

Salute to Harlem Dad’s at the Locke School of Arts & Engineering (formerly The Early Childhood Discovery and Design Magnet School  – PS 185M) – also affectionately known as “The LEGO School,” in Harlem, NY.

Locke School is an NYC Department of Education community school with a dedicated focus on educating the whole child, now serving Pre-K to fifth grades students. The Harlem, based school is named for the late scholar Alain L. Locke. The Locke school serves an ethnically diverse student body of nearly 400 bright and eager learners with a STEAM curriculum and partnerships with BCNY, Magic Box Productions and Bank Street College.

Annual Dads Make A Difference Breakfast & Rally is a school-based event, this year with opening remarks by New York State Senator, Harlem resident, and soon to be father Brian A. Benjamin. Senator Benjamin will share his adoration and support of the importance of male role models in the lives of all children. The annual event includes an active rally around the school and breakfast with students and their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, friends.

Principal Jane Murphy understands the power of a strong male role model for all children. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about my dad, and he passed a very long time ago. As adults, we often underestimate how much even the smallest of a moment can mean to a young person. Dads Make a Difference is our way of honoring the men of this community and the powerful positive impact they have in our lives”.

The Dads Make a Difference event was inspired by WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) – Engage men, inspire children, reduce bullying and enhance the educational environment at your school.

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) – Is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for the students and to enhance school security. Today, more than 2276 active programs in 41 states participate in the WATCH D.O.G.S. Program.
