Protecting All New Yorkers, Says Northern Manhattan Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez

March 28, 2020

It is incredible that one of the wealthiest nations in the world has been hobbled by a shortage in medical equipment, exposing us to be no more prepared than any developing nation in the world. Some of the most vulnerable communities are in Northern Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens among other areas throughout the 5 boroughs. In our City, our brave doctors, nurses, hospital staff, EMS workers, NPYD officers, firefighters and all other health care workers have been working around the clock to ensure every New Yorker receives the care and attention they need to survive. To them, I say thank you.

We have been made aware by many public servants that they have been able to locate and identify various sources of medical equipment for a fraction of the inflated price the State is currently paying some distributors. It is our responsibility to advocate and push through the bureaucratic red tape that has been delaying the release of live saving equipment. We need to call on all private, public, and military support to bring the resources the country needs during this unparalleled moment in history.

Additionally, we need to prioritize communities at higher risks and dangers in the City. Elmhurst hospital in Queens is only one of many hospitals across the City that desperately needs resources and proper medical equipment to ensure their healthcare workers and patients are kept safe during this pandemic. Many immigrant and low-income communities are especially at risk because of the many health conditions that particularly impact those communities at disproportionate rates. During this public health crisis, we will be remembered not by the number of New Yorkers we were able to save but rather by the lives of those who had succumbed to the virus because the wealthiest City in the nation was not able to provide sufficient amount of medical equipment.

Protegiendo Todos Los Neoyorquinos
