In celebration of African-American History Month and our 80th Anniversary, the Apollo Theater will open its doors for a Free Weekend to give visitors an understanding of our rich history, a preview of our future activities, and an honoring of a few of the “family members” that have helped us get to this point. On Saturday, February 8 from 1PM-5PM
Hosted by Apollo Tour Director and Ambassador Billy Mitchell, the afternoon will showcase:
- Dancers from the Harlem Swing Dance Society
- Doo-Wop from Winter Wonderland’s Acapella Soul cast members from Motown: the Musical ◊
- A preview of our Tribute to La Guarachera de Cuba: The Queen Celia Cruz with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute
- All The Way’s Brandon J. Dirden as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Harlem Arts Alliance’s Keith “The Captain” Gamble doing numbers by Jimi Hendrix and Prince ◊
- Harlem Jazz Shrines’ Claudia Hayden
- Hip-Hop from RhythmAndSoulRadio.com’s DJs and rappers Loaded Lux and JSWISS ◊
- R&B from Apollo Live’s “Petawane” Burris
- Latin music from Amateur Night’s Nicole Vanessa Ortiz
- Spoken Word from Amateur Night’s Jaylene Clark Owens
- The New York Amsterdam News’ Herb Boyd interviewing Apollo President Jonelle Procope and Executive Producer Mikki Shepard about the future Apollo.
Neither tickets nor reservations are necessary to attend festivities on Saturday, February 8th. Theater doors will open at approximately 12:30PM. General admission until seating capacity is reached.
On Sunday, February 9 at 5PM, it’s a celebration of spiritual music with a rousing concert hosted by Liz Black, featuring Gospel Amateur Night’s Ryta, Winter Wonderland’s Refining Faith and starring the incomparable Apollo Legend Pastor Shirley Caesar!
