NYC Parks & Partners Host Over 50 Stewardship Events From Harlem To Hollis During First Ever City Of Forest Day

Join us on Saturday, October 15, 2022, to learn, care for, and celebrate the NYC urban forest at ‘City of Forest Day’!

Did you know that New York City is home to more than 7 million trees, hundreds of acres of woodlands, and miles of trails? A healthy urban forest is essential for a healthy city—providing critical habitat for wildlife, cleaning our air and water, cooling our neighborhoods, and improving our health and wellbeing.

Presented by Forest for All NYC in partnership with the Parks and Open Space Partners – NYC Coalition and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, City of Forest Day is a day of activities across the city to raise awareness of the importance of the New York City urban forest, and the essential role New Yorkers play every day in caring for the “lungs” of our city.

Bronx

Seton Falls Park-Forest Restoration — NYC Parks Stewardship and Natural Areas Conservancy 

E. 233 St. bet. Seton Ave. and Baychester Ave., Bronx (Crawford Ave and Palmer Ave) 

Time: 9 AM – 12 PM 

Volunteer with the Stewardship Team and Natural Areas Conservancy to protect the forested areas in Seton Falls Park! Volunteers will contribute to ongoing restoration work and learn the importance of species diversity to ecosystem health. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty.

Natural History Tour of the NYBG Thain Family Forest — New York Botanical Garden 

2900 Southern Boulevard Bronx, NY 10458 (Meet at the Reflecting Pool in the Levy Visitor Center)  

Time: 10 AM – 11:30 AM

The Thain Family Forest is the largest uncut expanse of New York’s original wooded landscape. The Forest remains a magnificent reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature in the face of complex human-caused disturbances. Come learn about the history of this amazing space and how it has persevered over the centuries. All event participants will be required to purchase an NYBG grounds access ticket. Please note, NYBG grounds access tickets are free to all Bronx residents every day of the week.

Riverdale Forest Restoration — Riverdale Country School and NYC Parks 

Riverdale Park (Meet at the Riverdale Park parking lot at Spaulding Lane and Palisade Ave)  

Time: 10 AM – 1 PM

Join NYC Parks and your friendly neighborhood Super Stewards for some family-friendly activities in Riverdale Park as we celebrate our love of NYC’s urban forest and help steward the land. Activities will include an educational nature walk, followed by trail clean up and maintenance, and invasive species removal.

Tree Love — James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center *

100 W Mosholu Parkway S, Bronx NY 10468 (meet at corner of Goulden and Sedgwick Ave)

We will care for street trees by weeding, collecting trash, aerating the soil, and planting daffodils. We will also identify the trees. The participants will be awarded James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center Health Bucks to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and food at our farmers market.

Tree ID Scavenger Hunt Forest Restoration — NYC Parks 

Crotona Park East and Charlotte Street, Bronx

Time: 1 PM – 2:30 PM

Celebrate City of Forest Day with New York City Parks. There are 28 different species of trees in the urban forest of Crotona Park. Join the Urban Park Rangers to learn how to identify the species of trees and attempt to find them all!

East New York- Street Tree Care — NYC Parks Stewardship

Martin Luther King Playground at the intersection of Dumont Ave and Miller Ave

Time: 9 AM – 12 PM

Come work with NYC Parks Stewardship to care for local street trees! Learn how to aerate, cultivate, mulch, and identify street trees. Volunteers will also learn about the important roles street trees play in New York City. Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes.

Learn about and steward street trees in Gowanus by removing litter, aerating the soil, and applying compost. This event is open to all ages but all participants under 14 must have a parent or guardian present.

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a volunteer event for adults and teens 14+. Focusing our efforts on Lookout Hill, a scenic woodland restored by the Alliance, volunteers will help pick up litter that can harm this important wildlife habitat, maintain trails and paths, weed invasive species and other restoration activities.

Bi-Weekly Volunteer Day: City of Forest Day — Fort Greene Park Conservancy *

Join us for one of our regularly scheduled Bi-Weekly Volunteer days, happening every other week in Fort Greene Park! This week’s Bi-Weekly Volunteer Day celebrates City of Forest Day and focuses on the long-term health of the fragile tree canopy in Fort Greene Park. Tasks include mulching trees, spreading compost, and more!

Designing with Urban Street Trees — American Society of Landscape Architects, New York Chapter 

Meeting in front of Nu Hotel Brooklyn – 87 Smith Street near Atlantic Ave.

Design-focused walking tour! All are welcome to tour the downtown Brooklyn forest canopy with two landscape architects, Wendy Andringa, ASLA, and Elena Brescia, FASLA, who design New York City streetscapes.

Celebrate City of Forest Day with Trees New York at Green-Wood — Trees New York 

Green-Wood Cemetery. The group will meet at the Gothic Arch, enter via the main entrance at 25th St. and 5th Ave. and walk up the hill to the Arch.

Join Trees New York’s Education Director and Arborist, Sam Bishop for a fall tree walk at Green-Wood. We will look at some of the better trees for fall color, and Sam will give some tips to identify them so you can watch them in your neighborhood. To get ready for Halloween, we will also discuss some of the folklore around trees and this spirited season.

A History of Brooklyn’s Last Remaining Forest: Prospect Park — Prospect Park Alliance

On this tour with Prospect Park Alliance partner Turnstile Tours, explore the history of Brooklyn’s largest forest and the Alliance’s restoration of the woodlands. This 1.5 mile tour is appropriate for all ages. Please note, there will be limited restroom access and standing and walking over uneven surfaces is required.

Tree Stewardship Workshop: Prepare Your Street Tree Bed for Spring—Now! — Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Street trees do much to improve our environment but often receive little care. Fall is a great time to give your street tree some TLC to see it through winter and lay the groundwork for a healthy rebirth in spring. Yet even the most well-intentioned practices can damage our neighborhood trees. Learn to avoid the common “pit”-falls of tree bed gardening and how to remedy them. Topics include tree guards, watering, deterring dogs, low-maintenance plantings, and more. Bring your questions!

Celebrate City of Forest Day with NYC Parks. Forest meditation allows you to slow down and become immersed in nature. Come enjoy the sights and sounds of Prospect Park in this experiential hike focused on mindfulness and relaxation.

Garden Tour: Shinnecock Plant Oral History Tour — Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Meet at the north entrance to the Native Flora Garden

Join Chenae Bullock, a member of the Shinnecock Nation, for a Native Flora Garden tour and talk based on ITEK, or Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge. ITEK is a body of observations, oral and written knowledge, practices, and beliefs that promotes environmental sustainability and the responsible stewardship of natural resources through relationships between humans and environmental systems. Tree ID and Environmental History Walk — Brooklyn Public Library – Greenpoint Branch

Celebrate City of Forest Day by getting to know Greenpoint’s trees! Starting at the library, learn about the storied past of Greenpoint’s trees and environmental activism in the neighborhood. Then learn to identify some common street tree species by observing their leaves, seeds, bark, and structure. Participants will receive a tree identification guide to use on future strolls throughout the city.

We will clean up and care for our street trees in East Harlem. All are welcome. We’ll start at Miracle of Nature Organics (2056 2nd Ave) and will end the event at Perk Kafe on 1867 2nd Ave.

Fall Coastal Cleanup — Randall’s Island Park Alliance 

Meet at the 103rd Street Bridge, we’ll be at 10 Central Avenue Icahn Stadium.

Help us put our natural areas and shorelines to rest for the winter by removing trash and invasive species. Individuals and groups welcome. There will be a short tour of the natural areas after the clean-up. Registration is required.

Volunteer to care for New York City street tree beds by applying locally produced compost! Volunteers will help remove weeds and litter as well as apply compost – made from NYC food scraps – to street tree beds.

Join us in Bruce’s Garden (11 Park Terrace E, New York, NY) 10am – noon. Participants can write their thoughts and dreams about the urban forest, street trees and/or community gardens on paper leaves to hang on a line and be displayed. Accompanied children are welcome!

Volunteer Clean-Up and Bulb Planting on the Broadway Malls — Broadway Mall Association * 

138th Street and Broadway, south end of the Mall

Volunteers will join the staff of the Broadway Mall Association in clearing the Broadway malls of trash and other debris, and help us plant daffodil bulbs to welcome the spring. This event is open to volunteers of all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Explore Riverside Park’s Forever Wild Forest — Riverside Park Conservancy * 

116th Street and Riverside Drive entrance

In celebration of City of Forest Day, Riverside Park Conservancy will host a family friendly event at the Park’s 116th Street and Riverside Drive entrance and Forever Wild Forest. Conservancy staff will provide information and activities for families at our tabling station. Forest stewards will lead the public through the hiking trail, providing a glance into the ecology and natural history of this vital habitat, all the while facilitating a discussion around what this space needs to thrive into the future. Along this journey we will be making observations on local wildlife such as birds, insects, and mammals. Nature enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join!

QUERCUS — Washington Square Park Eco Projects * 

Garibaldi Plaza, Washington Square Park (Manhattan)

Join us to celebrate oaks! QUERCUS is an interactive 8 foot cardboard sculpture modeled after the Northern Red oak, a local oak species. The sculpture shows a red oak in four seasons including decorative medallions that provide natural history and cultural data. Make your own data medallion, look for acorns, and more.

Meet at the East Entrance of Icahn Stadium, we’ll be at the Woodland Garden.

NYC Street Tree Countdown (self-guided) — The Nature Conservancy 

Virtual (wherever you are!)

Learn about the top 5 most common street trees in NYC and find them in an area where you live, work or play. The Nature Conservancy will share fun facts about the trees via social media and encourage you to use the NYC Parks Street Tree Map. You can do this on your own or with friends and family.

Learn about the ways street trees make our city healthier, happier, and more resilient to climate change. Then create your very own thank you letter, poem, or work of art in appreciation of your favorite tree. Participants can take their works home or display them in our on-street gallery. Spanish- and English-speaking educators will be on hand for the duration of this drop-in session.

Come join our usual tree stewardship work, possibly combined with some pollinator plantings in our street tree gardens. We will also do some environmental education as we work, explaining why forests are so important to our city environment. We ask that children 10 and under be accompanied by parents.

Alley Pond Forest Restoration and Super Stewards Orientation — Friends of Alley Pond Park and NYC Parks

This event, from 10am to noon, will be followed by a Super Steward Orientation session at the nearby Alley Pond Environmental Center from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, for those wishing to pursue training to become NYC Parks Super Stewards.

Nature Immersion/ Forest Bathing — Mindful Astoria

Astoria Park, 19 19th Street (corner of Ditmars Boulevard and 19th Street)

Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve feelings of happiness, among other benefits. Incorporating mindfulness meditation and nature immersion, Dan McFadden and Vanessa Heller lead this immersive practice, helping us reconnect with our environment and ourselves. Guided seated and walking meditations will be incorporated.

Celebrating 175 Years of Flushing’s Weeping Beech Tree — Queens Historical Society

This event will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Weeping Beech Tree located at Weeping Beech Park home of Kingsland Homestead, the headquarters of the Queens Historical Society. Greenbelt Conservation Corps Stewardship and Native Plantings in High Rock Park Part 1 — NYC Parks/Staten Island Greenbelt

Meet at the parking lot at the entrance of High Rock Park, 200 Nevada Avenue, Staten Island NY 10306

In part 1 of this full day of stewardship, you will learn to build wooden puncheon, which will help increase safe accessibility to our wooded trails so that more people can benefit from the joys and comforts of nature.

Guided Nature Walk — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

Lemon Creek Tidal Wetlands Area

Time: 10 AM – 11 AM or 11 AM – 12 PM  

Join NYSDEC Educators for an hour-long guided nature walk at Lemon Creek Tidal Wetland Area on Saturday, October 15 at 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM or 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We’ll identify the trees that make up the forest, search for wildlife that they support, discuss the future of our local forests, and how we can help them.

Great Trees of High Rock Park— NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers 

Nevada Avenue Parking Lot in High Rock Park (200 Nevada Avenue, Staten Island)

Join the Urban Park Rangers as we walk through this enchanted forest identifying various trees and learn about their significance within this forest ecosystem.

City of Forest Day: Conference House Park-Forest Restoration — NYC Parks

Conference House Park Visitor Center, 298 Satterlee Street, Staten Island

Time: 10 AM – 1 PM 

Volunteer with the Stewardship Team to plant plugs and shrubs in the forest of Conference House Park! Volunteers will be trained in proper planting techniques. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty.

Greenbelt Conservation Corps Stewardship and Native Plantings in High Rock Park Part 2 — NYC Parks/Staten Island Greenbelt

Meet at the parking lot at the entrance of High Rock Park, 200 Nevada Avenue, Staten Island NY 10306

Time: 12 PM – 2 PM 

In part 2 of this full day of stewardship, you will help restore an area of our forest by planting native shrubs in the understory, as well as learn about and remove invasive plants from the area.

Enjoy and take care of the urban forest everyday (not just City of Forest Day) by remembering to: 

• Keep our urban green spaces clean–including our street tree beds, public parks, community gardens and woodlands.
• Avoid climbing or hanging hammocks or other objects on trees. This harms the bark, which can leave trees vulnerable to infection and disease.
• Stay on marked paths in parks and natural forested (woodland) areas. The forest floor is home to a rich carpet of leaves, plants, insects, bugs and nesting areas that are essential to a healthy forest habitat.
• Keep dogs leashed at all times in woodland areas to protect sensitive wildlife areas.
• Enjoy flowers with your eyes, but do not pick blooms. Please leave flowers for pollinators like bees and butterflies, which are essential to the biodiversity of NYC.
• Support the NYC Urban Forest Agenda and read the State of the Urban Forest in NYC to learn more about the urban forest.
