SOMOS Community Care, a network of over 2,800 community doctors serving low-income, immigrant communities of color across New York City.
Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced that New Yorkers vaccinated at SOMOS physicians’ offices will now be eligible for the City’s $100 vaccine incentive after receiving their first dose.
Expanding the incentive to include doctors’ offices in the SOMOS network – which are concentrated in communities like Washington Heights, the South Bronx, Corona, Flushing, and Sunset Park – will increase vaccine equity among communities of color.
“Our patients trust their SOMOS physicians because we speak their languages, share their cultures, and have been caring for them for years – which is why many New Yorkers are more likely to get the COVID-19 vaccine from their physician instead of a government-run site,” said Dr. Ramon Tallaj, Chairman and Founder of SOMOS Community Care. “This trust is why we’ve been working with our partners in government to distribute the Vaccine of Hope across the city, and it’s why New York City is launching this new initiative with SOMOS to vaccinate children and expanding its incentive to include our network. This incentive will bolster our community doctors’ outreach and ensure the vaccine reaches everyone who wants it – especially children of color —something we can all be thankful for this holiday season.”
“Throughout the pandemic, New York City and State have relied on SOMOS to provide testing and vaccines to all communities, from Wall Street to main street – and we’ve answered the call without hesitation, hosting over 70 trilingual testing sites and administering more than 1.5 million COVID vaccines at more than 200 vaccine sites,” said Henry R. Muñoz III, co-founder and partner of SOMOS US. “We are building a new model of preventative care for the communities that are overlooked by traditional healthcare systems – low-income, immigrant communities of color – and bringing this vaccine incentive directly into the communities SOMOS serves is critical to that goal. As we expand our partnership with New York City to include a push to vaccinate children, this incentive is another tool for our pediatricians to start conversations and win over hesitant parents. We thank Mayor de Blasio for his partnership in ensuring vaccine equity across the five boroughs.”
To date, SOMOS Community Care has administered more than 1.5 million doses of the COVID-19 “Vaccine of Hope” to New Yorkers.
SOMOS vaccine sites have ranged from major New York City landmarks like Yankee Stadium and Grand Central Terminal to local physicians’ offices across the city.
Earlier this year, SOMOS partnered with Marvel’s The Avengers to release a limited-edition bilingual comic book about fighting COVID, which is only available at SOMOS vaccine sites.

SOMOS Community Care and SOMOS US form the foundation of an innovative, value-based care network of over 2,800 diverse physicians and health care providers serving nearly 1 million people in New York City.
SOMOS has created a new model of quality, preventative health care on behalf of the most underserved communities of the United States, a model based on cultural competency, increased access, and the ability of community-based medicine to successfully address the social determinants of health.
SOMOS is the shared vision of Dr. Ramon Tallaj and Henry R. Muñoz, III, a doctor, and a designer, working together to create institutional change.
