The Legal Aid Society and the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys (ALAA) released the following joint statement today following Mayor de Blasio’s and Harlem City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
The rebuke of two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump dealing with immigration policy and federal funding to states and cities for public safety:
The Legal Aid Society and the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys laud Mayor Bill de Blasio’s and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s repudiation of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump today that would place hundreds of thousands of New York City immigrant families in immediate danger. New York City must remain a true sanctuary city, and to protect marginalized communities eliminating broken windows policing that places black and brown people in immediate danger of detention and deportation must be a top priority. These are not separate issues but even more linked today by the signing of these executive orders. This is an area where the Mayor has unilateral control and only swift action on his part will help keep families protected from systematic deportations that President Trump is trying to codify as law.
