East Harlem Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito fought to preserve the People’s Church in East Harlem, the church that the Young Lords took over on December 28, 1969. If we’re not telling our stories and preserving our legacy then nobody will. The First Spanish United Methodist Church is a landmark not just in El Barrio/East Harlem, but in New York City and it deserves our landmark status.
