New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced that City Hall and other municipal buildings will be lit up blue and yellow tonight in honor of Ukraine’s Independence Day.
“We join our fellow brothers and sisters in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian New Yorkers, in commemorating 32 years of independence and calling for an immediate end to this unprovoked and unjust war. Our administration will continue to provide access to services and support to Ukrainians in any way possible,” said Mayor Adams. “As a city of immigrants, and the home of the largest Ukrainian population in America, New York City stands in solidarity with Ukraine on their Independence Day and every day.”
“As a Ukrainian New Yorker, I am grateful to Mayor Adams for his leadership and support to our community,” said New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs Commissioner Edward Mermelstein. “The impact of this war has been devastating, but I am proud of the resources our administration has provided to Ukrainians, including those in New York City. We will continue to work closely with stakeholders, including the Consulate of Ukraine to ensure needs are met.”
“Today, we stand united with the Ukrainian community to honor their independence and continue to call on an end to the war,” said New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Manuel Castro. “From the very beginning of the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, New York City has shown our continued and relentless commitment to Ukrainian New Yorkers and Ukrainian overseas, calling for TPS and launching the Ukrainian Response Initiative. Our office will continue to work with community groups on the ground to ensure recently arrived Ukrainians are connected to resources and services, and, most importantly, know that this city has their back.”
“I would like to particularly thank the people and government officials of the City of New York for their partnership over the past 18 months. Thank you to all who continue to support Ukraine, who hosted our people, who wave our national flags, and those who have acted to help us,” said Oleksii Holubov, Consul General of Ukraine in New York. “Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine a year and a half ago, in a war that has been ongoing for over nine years, the Office of the Mayor of New York City has made this city a symbol of solidarity, by lighting their significant municipal buildings, as well as City Hall, in the colors of the National Flag of Ukraine. At this crucial stage of the war, the Consulate General of Ukraine looks forward to strengthening our collaboration with the City of New York to redouble critically needed support for our country and Ukrainian New Yorkers.”

Last year, Mayor Adams announced that the City of New York would provide more than $2 million in funding to help currently residing and newly arrived Ukrainian New Yorkers get access to immigration legal assistance, translation services, social services, and other resources.
Tonight, to mark Ukraine’s 32 years of Independence, City Hall and the following city municipal buildings will be lit up blue and yellow starting at sundown:
- Bronx Borough Hall: 851 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451
- The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building: 1 Centre Street, New York, NY 10007
- Staten Island Borough Hall: 10 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301
