The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently honored Susan Taylor, the National CARES Mentoring Program founder at a celebration of Women’s History Month. The museum educator who runs the Met’s high school internship program, was interested in learning more about our local Mentor-Recruitment Affiliates, so she thought it would be a great idea to reach out to us.
The Met’s high school internship program is a paid opportunity for students to get the inside scoop on a wide variety of Museum jobs, develop professional skills and experience, and learn about art from diverse cultures. Interns spend a portion of the program observing, assisting, and receiving mentorship from a museum professional. These professionals are experts in areas as wide-ranging as museum education, editorial, and engineering so we are able to match interns according to their current interests with adults in a career they are considering. Interns don’t need prior experience or specific knowledge of art or art history – just an interest in learning about museum careers and great works of art.
The school year program is open to juniors and seniors at NYC Department of Education Title I high schools (schools with high percentages of students from low-income households). The summer program is open to students who will have just completed their junior or senior year at any high school in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tristate area when the program begins.
If you serve any students who might have interest in the program, please have them visit http://www.metmuseum.org/highschoolinternships for more information. Feel free to be in touch with me if you should need any additional information.
If you think you will frequently have students interested in applying, please let me know and I will add this email address (or another one if you prefer) to our High School Internship Program mailing list.
Best Wishes,
