Harlem Rep. Espaillat Reunites Honduran Mother, Rosa Amelia, With Separated Children

August 16, 2018

Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat released the following statement on the successful reunification of Honduran mother, Rosa Amelia Peralta, with her children today at the Cayuga Center located in East Harlem.

“My office worked diligently with the Cayuga Center, Univision News, Catholic Charities Los Angeles and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ensure the successful reunification of Rosa Amelia Peralta and her husband, Juan Carlos, with their two children, ages 9 and 11 years old,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “From the time I was made aware, my staff worked around the clock to ensure and confirm this family would be brought back together.

“The Trump administration continues to miss each court ordered deadline to right its wrong of family separation, and its gross mishandling of tracking and reuniting parents with their children. Today is a victory for this Honduran family, but still much work remains as progress by the Trump administration has remained abysmally low. 386 parents have already been deported while their children remain in limbo. My heart breaks each time I hear their stories, the difficulty they experience as they wait for their day in court for due process, and of their treatment at ICE detention centers as they seek asylum here in the U.S., the land of dreams. Even more troubling, there remain at least 26 children who this administration knows nothing about, and who could potentially become orphans because of this reckless policy that further endangers their lives and their futures,” he concluded.

To date, Rep. Espaillat has successfully reunited three previously separated immigrant families, including mothers Yeni Gonzalez and Rosayra Cruz. He is currently working to assist other families and has been the only elected official actively engaged with the Cayuga Center to help ensure family reunification. Rep. Espaillat continues his efforts in Congress to promote family unity under the extraordinary circumstances created by the reckless policies being put forth by the Trump Administration.
