Harlem Rep Espaillat Leads Team Of Electeds And Workers In American Airline Job Letter

Today, Harlem Representative Adriano Espaillat led 26 of his colleagues from downstate New York and northern New Jersey in sending a letter to top leadership at American Airlines and unions representing their workforce urging them to maintain jobs in the greater New York metropolitan region.

“As members of Congress representing the communities in the New York metropolitan area, we are committed to ensuring that our constituents continue to have opportunities to earn a living and raise their families in dignity and security,” the members said in the letter.

The airline employs upward of 2,000 mechanics, technicians and other ground-based crew at the region’s major airports. The workers are represented by the Transportation Workers Union of America (TWU) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).

The letter continues: “These workers have good-paying, middle-class jobs and help generate millions of dollars of economic activity across the northeast. Your organizations have played an integral role in our region for decades and have provided many of our constituents with living wages even as the cost of living in our area has greatly increased. We want to ensure you continue to be an integral part of our region’s workforce and economy.”

Espaillat was joined by Reps. Yvette D. Clarke, Eliot L. Engel, Hakeem S. Jeffries, Peter T. King, Nita M. Lowey, Carolyn B. Maloney, Sean Patrick Maloney, Gregory W. Meeks, Grace Meng, Jerrold Nadler, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Kathleen M. Rice, Max Rose, José E. Serrano, Thomas R. Suozzi, Nydia Velázquez and Lee M. Zeldin of New York; and Reps. First elected to Congress in 2016, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is serving his second term in Congress where he serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the House Small Business Committee. He serves as a Senior Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) where he also serves in a leadership role as CHC Whip.
