Harlem Rep Espaillat Calls For Reinvestigation Of The Assassination Of Malcolm X

February 11, 2020

Representative Adriano Espaillat issued the following statement to call for the case involving the assassination of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, known as Malcolm X, be reinvestigated with the use of modern technology following the Netflix docuseries “Who Killed Malcolm X?”

“As a young immigrant boy, I remember the day Malcolm X was assassinated and it left an indelible mark on me as a young man and on my decision to enter public service,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “The death of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, known as Malcolm X, is one of the most high-profile assassinations and cover up stories in American history.

“Days following the tragedy, I remember my grandparents and other adults throughout the community talking about it and how the case was being handled, which is reiterated in the Netflix docuseries “Who Killed Malcolm X?” The events around his assassination and how the case was improperly handled are indicative of the political landscape, disparities in the judicial system, racial injustices and sentiments toward individuals of color that have remained persistent throughout our nation’s history. It’s time to reopen this case, and it is time to investigate fully and with the assistance of modern technology to find truth and justice to finally resolve who was responsible for the assassination of Malcolm X once and for all.

“This week marks the 55th anniversary of the assassination, and I will be introducing a resolution highlighting Malcolm’s legacy, commemorating his life, and calling for his case to be reopened.”

First elected to Congress in 2016, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is serving his second term in Congress where he serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the House Small Business Committee. He serves as a Senior Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) where he also serves in a leadership role as CHC Whip. He is also chairman of the CHC Task Force for Transportation, Infrastructure and Housing. Rep. Espaillat’s Congressional District includes Harlem, East Harlem, northern Manhattan and the north-west Bronx. To find out more about Rep. Espaillat, visit online at https://espaillat.house.gov/.

(¿Quién mató a Malcolm X?).
