Harlem Community Unites Against the Threat Of Illegal Smoke Shops: Press Conference

April 1, 2024

The vibrant and resilient community of Harlem is facing a critical challenge as the specter of illegal, unlicensed smoke shops looms over our streets.

In response to this pressing threat, concerned residents and community leaders are banding together to take action and protect our neighborhood, particularly our most vulnerable members – our children.

Recent developments have sparked outrage and alarm among Harlem residents. The potential opening of a smoke shop at 2195 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, adjacent to the esteemed Heaven’s Tiny Tots Daycare and Learning Center, has ignited a firestorm of concern. This proposed establishment, located in what was once a cherished barber shop, represents a direct threat to the safety, health, and future of our community.

Harlem’s sense of unity and pride has been shaken by the revelation that longstanding businesses like Sade SkinCare have been denied the opportunity to occupy this space, only to have it offered to an outside entity under false pretenses. The discovery of smoke-related imagery on the storefront’s ceiling decal serves as a stark reminder of the deceptive tactics employed by those seeking to profit at the expense of our community’s well-being.

The implications of allowing such establishments to flourish in our neighborhood are dire. Smoke shops attract unsavory elements, increase crime rates, and pose a significant risk to our children’s health and safety. The presence of these establishments not only threatens our physical environment but also undermines the sense of security and cohesion that defines Harlem.

In response to these alarming developments, concerned citizens, community leaders, and advocates will come together for a press conference on Monday, April 1, in front of Heaven’s Tiny Tots Daycare (located between West 130th & West 129th Street in Harlem). This gathering will serve as a rallying cry for all members of the Harlem community to stand in solidarity against the encroachment of illegal smoke shops into our neighborhood.

We urge all residents, business owners, parents, and stakeholders to join us in this crucial moment. Together, we can send a powerful message that Harlem will not be exploited or compromised. We will not allow our children to be exposed to the dangers posed by these illicit establishments. We will reclaim our streets, protect our community, and preserve the vibrant spirit of Harlem.

Join us as we stand united against the threat of illegal smoke shops. Together, we are #oneharlem.
