Frederick Douglass High School Students Take A Stand For Healthier Lunches In Harlem

On Monday, March 25th, 2019, about 20 high school freshman from Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem presented what they’ve learned in Harlem Boys and Girls Club “Storytellers” program at 521 West 145th Street in Harlem.

The students used the skills they learned in the program to successfully advocate for healthier school lunches. They showcased the work that they’ve done over the past semester to improve the quality of their school lunches. The program and the students were supported by AT&T – which teaches students how to tell their life stories through digital technology.

Many of the students experience food insecurity, leverage what they have learned in the program to launch a campaign incorporating various forms of digital and social media to advocate for more nutritious school meals. The students succeeded in changing their school’s policy and students are now part of the process of planning healthy lunch menus at Frederick Douglass.
