Enough Is Enough, Harlem’s Espailat And Others Calls For DOJ To Investigate Ahmaud Arbery’s Death

May 14, 2020

Today, Harlem’s Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Representative Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus,

led members of the New York congressional delegation on a letter calling on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to fulfill the requests of both Georgia Attorney General Christopher Carr and the family of Ahmaud Arbery to investigate the handling of the case surrounding of Mr. Arbery’s death.

“We must address the systems of injustice that continue to oppress people of color. Ahmaud represents countless men and women of color who are oppressed in America. While the Department of Justice has committed to assisting in the investigation and assessing whether hate crimes charges are appropriate, there has been no commitment at the federal level to investigate the mishandling of this case,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “Arrests, in this case, were delayed by more than two months and there are multiple conflicts of interest and concerning actions by the prosecutors and police department that warrant a full investigation. We cannot remain silent and as a nation, we must demand justice and full oversight in this case.”

“Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down in cold blood by two men who apparently targeted him as a result of the color of his skin. This vicious hate crime should shock the conscience of America. The perpetrators must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Enough is enough,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08).

Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08).
