Before you can get to that point, though, you’ll need to get over the learning curve of your first few days of vaping. That’s where some people run into problems, and to avoid those problems, you need a little dose of Vaping 101 before you get started.

When you’re shopping for your first vaping device, the best place to look is almost always an online vape shop because that’s where you’ll find the best selection of products designed for beginners. Convenience stores, gas stations and supermarkets usually carry plenty of beginner-oriented e-cigarettes, but those e-cigarettes generally use pre-filled cartridges and pods. Using a pre-filled vaping device means that you’ll pay more to vape because using a pre-filled vape cartridge each day costs significantly more than buying a bottle of e-liquid every week or two. Pre-filled vaping devices are also severely limited in their flavor selections. If you want to vape cheaply and enjoy the widest possible flavor selection, you need a refillable vaping device.
Brick-and-mortar vape shops do carry refillable vaping devices, but they’re rarely the types of devices that you’d want to buy as a beginning vaper. The large, colorful devices that you see at vape shops are designed for experienced vapers. They’re intended for use with lower-nicotine e-liquids, and they’re designed for direct-to-lung inhaling, which isn’t what you’re likely to prefer as a new vaper.
You’ll have the best possible experience if your first vaping device is a refillable device that’s small, has tight airflow characteristics and is designed for mouth-to-lung inhaling.
Choose a High Nicotine Strength to Ensure Satisfaction
The most important aspect of choosing the right setup for your needs as a new vaper is selecting the correct hardware. The next most important aspect is choosing the right nicotine strength for your needs. In most cases, the ideal nicotine strength for a new vaper is the highest strength available.
- In the United States and Canada, the highest available nicotine strength for most e-liquid brands is around 50 mg/ml. That’s usually the strength that you should select unless you’re a very infrequent smoker.
- In the United Kingdom and Europe, the highest available nicotine strength is 20 mg/ml due to legal restrictions. Most smokers should choose that nicotine strength.
When you shop for vape juice, you’ll see two types: one with freebase nicotine and one with nicotine salt. Nicotine salt e-liquid has a more neutral pH than freebase nicotine vape juice, allowing it to remain smooth and easy to inhale even when the nicotine strength is high. Nicotine salt e-liquid is almost always the right choice for a new vaper.
Stop Smoking When You Start Vaping
If you want to ensure that your switch to vaping will be successful, you should make the commitment that you’re going to stop smoking when you get your first vaping device. You know that switching to vaping means that you’ll still be able to get your nicotine. You also know the vaping delivers nicotine far more efficiently than other forms of nicotine replacement, which means that you can definitely use vaping to help yourself quit smoking – even if you’ve tried to quit with other nicotine replacement products and failed. You simply need to make the commitment that, no matter what, you’re going to make vaping work for you.
Why is it so important to commit to quitting when you get your first vaping device? It’s important because your first e-cigarette is something that’s new and novel. Even though you’re still getting your nicotine, it’ll be a few days before you start to feel normal after you quit smoking because your body will need time to detoxify itself from the chemicals in cigarette smoke other than nicotine. Don’t Vape With a Dry Atomizer Coil

The atomizer coil in a vaping device has a wick that’s usually made from cotton. After you fill your tank or pod, it’s important to let your vaping device stand for several minutes to give the wick sufficient time to become completely saturated with vape juice. If you don’t do that, you might burn the wick when you try to vape.
Sometimes, people get discouraged when they try vaping for the first time because they get an unpleasant burned flavor. They find that every puff tastes burned, and because they’ve never experienced anything else, they assume vaping is supposed to be that way. What they don’t realize is that they’ve accidentally burned their devices’ wicks. If you try to vape with burned cotton, you’re always going to have a bad experience. When you’re using a new pod or a new atomizer coil, always let it stand for several minutes before you start vaping.
