Beetle down

By Michael Andre Adams

Right about now, just before the unbearable, sweltering daytime temperatures of summer arrive—is the perfect time to enjoy a day in the sun with the top dropped. And you don’t have to break the bank to do so in style, with fun and in good taste, thanks to VW’s Beetle Convertible at the TDI (clean diesel) trim level, with Sound & Navigation. At this price, it has everything you need in a cool whip!

Base:                             $31,195

Fuel Economy:            31 mpg combined, 28 city / 37 highway

Annual Fuel:                $1,850 at 15,000 miles

For starters, the VW Beetle—a classic in its own right, has always represented the essence of style and good taste, regardless of income. Available color combinations such as moonrock silver metallic (think beige), with beige VW-leather interior, a beige soft top powered convertible, a cool spoiler, and a set of 17-inch alloy rims all adds further to Beetles upscale image. But the real fun begins the moment you step inside and take control via the captain’s seat.

Whether you choose the base model Beetle Convertible TDI at $28,895, or the above priced Beetle Convertible TDI with Sound & Navigation, each boasts a spunky 2.0 liter, inline four cylinder, 140-horsepower turbo engine that delivers 236 lb-ft of torque and the option of a six speed manual or six speed automatic with sport mode-tranny. Translation: a super thrust of power (for a vehicle in this weight class) to the front wheels whenever called upon and 0-60 in just under eight seconds. Other aspects relative to handling include electro-mechanical power steering, stability control, anti-slip regulation and electronic brake force distribution—all for a fun yet stable ride.

With the top up, wind noise at high speeds is noticeable. But with the top dropped, windows up and the Fender sound system grooving to your favorite tunes, you’ll be absolutely amazed by the absence of the wind. So in other words, it’s the perfect spring, summer, fall whip!

Beetle inter 500Beetle’s interior layout is clean. The beauty of a convertible requires the ability to conceal items when the top is dropped, for which VW designers have provided ample areas, including beneath the armrest and above the glove box. Still there’s cup holder space and the convenience of a back seat that can actually hold passengers, clowns barred!

Other highlights include keyless entry, keyless start/stop, touch-screen navigation and all other accoutrements we’ve come to expects such as Bluetooth and iPod integration.

For whatever age and income bracket, this one’s a classic!
