Call To Shut Down New York City Now To Contain Coronavirus, Says Uptown Council Member Rodriguez

March 19, 2020

Statement from Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez:

Given the highly contagious nature of the Coronavirus and lack of widespread testing in New York City, I call on Mayor de Blasio to shut down New York City immediately. We need to implement shelter-in-place measures if we are to stop the spread of COVID-19. The global experience with the Novel Coronavirus pandemic has already demonstrated that the only defense we have against this plague is social separation.

Today, we have more than 4,000 Coronavirus cases in NYC. While there is no timeline for a vaccine and very limited testing capacity, our hospitals and nursing care systems are already showing signs of stress. We’ll soon have medical supplies and crucial equipment shortages as cases are multiplying by the day.

Keeping the City running is only creating the conditions for exponential spread of the virus and the subsequent exhaustion of our medical system. In addition to closing our schools and banning all public gatherings, we should immediately close our airports and all non-essential businesses. All travel within the City should only be allowed if demonstrably necessary for essential work or health reasons. This Citywide quarantine should also apply to all public and private employees. Going out should only be permitted for urgent and absolutely necessary errands, such as obtaining foodstuffs, medicines, and to commute to and perform essential duties.

These strict measures are necessary if we are to be able to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. While they represent a very serious decision, we should not hesitate to make hard decisions in the face of such daunting prospects. We have already witnessed how results have wildly differed in other nations confronted with this health crisis as a result of the measures they have implemented.

The time is now to take swift action on curtailing a health crisis without putting economic concerns above the wellbeing of our residents. That is why I’m calling on Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo to take action now and close NYC down and impose a curfew.
