The Community Board 12, uptown often receives inquiries on how to become a public member. I am happy to give you some information as well as an application.
Briefly said, public members are appointed by the board chairperson, meet ten times per year on a board committee and have voting and speaking rights only on that committee. There is no requirement that they attend any other board meetings. There is no monetary compensation for service on community boards.
Public members have the opportunity to learn about urban and community issues, network with public officials as well as be on the loop for civic engagement announcements and attend free workshops and events hosted throughout the city.
Today, with the advent of term limits and my desire to have more diversity on our board we need your participation as there are only a few slots available each year for full board membership. Public members often play an important role as occasionally they have allowed committees with small membership to maintain a quorum and pass important resolutions.
So please complete this form or if you are a current board member pass it along to someone else who you feel can make a contribution to our board and ultimately to the residents of our community. It would also be helpful if you returned this form to the board office within the next two weeks.
For those who have also applied for full board membership through the Manhattan Borough President’s Office or may not have re-upped there is no conflict filling out either application as they are independent of each other. I hope to hear from you soon.
