Gotham Magazine reports that for New Yorkers from Harlem to Hollis, weekend getaways are crucial—especially two and a half hour excursions that offer a rare interaction with nature.
A visit upstate checks both boxes; the newly minted Eastwind Hotel in Windham in the Catskills can tick another by being the most charming spot to stay. Originally a 1920s bunkhouse, this boutique hotel transformed both itself and the laid-back mountain town adorably dubbed “Land in the Sky.” Typically a seasonal retreat for skiing in winter months, Eastwind draws visitors year-round, and it’s clear why.
Awash in a camp-cool aesthetic, the hotel has 19 rooms, two of which are “writer’s studios” and three are Lushna cabins. The decor is midcentury in style, simple but with intention and taste.
The salon area has a cocktail bar, and the lounge area has faded Turkish rugs, wildflower arrangements and a crackling fire waiting for a guest to sip wine over one of the scantily strewn vintage books. The Lushna cabins have to be called out: A-frame wood huts sit on a small hill offering a more authentic glamping experience, with windows wide enough to gaze at the Windham mountain range by day and stargaze by night. There are movie screenings in the summer, game nights and even art classes. The outdoor bonfire pit is the place to be, a perfect spot to meet folks. Culinary pursuits are local and taste as much: delicious and hearty offerings like sliced lean steak sprinkled with Maldon salt, a (almost) better-than-your-mom’s potato salad and whatever vegetable is in season.
If you are lucky, a colorful cornucopia of locally foraged herbs and flowers are distilled as bitters as off-menu custom cocktails—a glass so good you’ll be planning your next visit before you even finish.
