By Walter Rutledge

On June 20th , 2011 at 8pm The American Airlines Theatre located at 227 West 42 Street will be the New York venue for 1 Voice, 1 Play, 1 Day; the inaugural event of Project1Voice.

The groundbreaking event will present staged readings of playwright and Harlem resident Alice Childress’ classic play TROUBLE IN MIND. Readings of the work will also take place on June 20 at; the Crossroads Theatre Company (New Brunswick, N.J.) Freedom Theatre (Philadelphia, Pa.), Kuntu Repertory Theatre (Pittsburgh, Pa.), African Continuum Theatre Company (Howard University), Rainey Institute (Cleveland, Oh), Congo Square Theatre Company (Chicago, Il.), Uprooted (Milwaukee, Wi.), Aldridge Repertory Theatre (Birmingham, Al.), Jubilee Theatre (Fort Worth, Tx.) African American Repertory Theatre (Dallas, Tx.), The Ensemble Theatre (Houston, Tx.) Ebony Repertory Theatre (Los Angles, Ca.) and Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (San Francisco, Ca.).

The readings are a call for solidarity, highlighting a great work of a marginalized, but important playwright. 1 Voice, 1 Play, 1Day is also a wake up call to the plight of Africa American theatre companies nationwide who are struggling to keep the footlights burning and doors open. Most of the companies are located in urban neighborhoods and provide quality theatre and theatrical training for these under served and poorly represented communities.
