NYC Health + Hospitals Announces Current Fellows And New Fellowship Application

July 24, 2020

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the open application period for the 2021-2022 Clinical Leadership Fellowship.

The fellowship is a one-year opportunity designed for post-residency graduates interested in administrative roles within the nation’s largest public hospital system.

Fellows are assigned to teams within the public health system’s offices of quality, population health, ambulatory care, or medical and professional affairs to acquire hands-on, practical work experience, supplemented with participation in leadership meetings and developing and leading a substantial project within these teams.

In addition to their primary administrative responsibilities, fellows also provide clinical care outside their fellowship activities, ensuring they can provide care to some of the City’s most vulnerable patients. The 2019-2020 class of fellows, the program’s inaugural class, had the opportunity to play critical roles in the public health system’s COVID-19 response, among other programs.

The application deadline for the fellowship is Friday, October 30, 2020.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the next class of clinical leadership fellows and further expanding the life experiences and knowledge of those clinicians that will enhance the care NYC Health + Hospitals already provides New Yorkers,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Chief Medical Officer Machelle Allen, MD. “We have already seen the benefits of our fellows’ innovation, commitment to the public health call, and passion, and we are excited to see how much more they can help the City’s public health system achieve.”

“It has been a pleasure to work closely with the inaugural class of fellows who quickly assumed leadership roles in preparation, response and recovery during the City’s most challenging health crisis with COVID-19,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “Their innovation, ingenuity, and commitment to those most acutely affected by this pandemic benefited the City at large. We are looking forward to the same from this year’s class of fellows and those that follow.”

“It is our privilege to welcome our second-year class of fellows. Last year’s class made incredible contributions across our system and across NYC during the COVID pandemic,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care Ted Long, MD, MHS. “One of the special things about this fellowship is that it is a two-way street, where we’ve been able to provide valuable leadership experience to them but we’ve also learned from their fearlessness and innovation on ways to further tackle some of our health system’s most daunting challenges.”

“Inviting young physicians that are just as passionate about access to affordable and quality healthcare to the table where decisions are discussed and programs developed contributes to the overall strength and success of the services provided to the communities we serve.”

“As healthcare professionals working within the country’s largest public health system, we are challenged with not only caring for patients but also navigating through the social determinants of health that contribute greatly to a person’s overall wellbeing,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Office of Population Health Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer Nichola Davis, MD. “Inviting young physicians that are just as passionate about access to affordable and quality healthcare to the table where decisions are discussed and programs developed contributes to the overall strength and success of the services provided to the communities we serve.”

“The Clinical Leadership Fellowship is a great opportunity for future health care leaders to learn the connections between clinical practice and program management,” said Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard N. Gottfried. “I would encourage interested New Yorkers to apply and I look forward to the work the 2019-2020 class will do.”

During the 2021-2022 program year, fellows will be placed in the NYC Health + Hospitals’ Office of Quality and Safety, Ambulatory Care, which includes the division of Population Health, or Medical and Professional Affairs.

Throughout their fellowship, successful applicants will receive direct mentorship from leaders within these areas, interested participants may also inquire about opportunities to apply to be a facility-based Clinical Leadership Fellow, in which they would conduct their administrative and clinical time at a NYC Health + Hospitals acute or community-based facility.

The curriculum will include fundamentals of leadership and administration, population health approaches to improving outcomes, team facilitation, and change management, fundamentals of quality improvement and science of quality measurement, developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives, and designing safe systems and building a “just” culture.

As part of their participation, fellows will be required to design and lead a quality improvement or population health-oriented project at their sponsoring facility.

The 2020 – 2021 class of fellows began their fellowship on July 13, 2020. The fellowship class includes the following participants:

Over 90,000 New Yorkers used this hotline during the COVID-19 peak in the City.
