In response to shocking statistics revealing that over 80% of shooting victims in East Harlem since 2002 were under 25.
East Harlem students are taking the lead in addressing the community’s urgent gun violence concerns.
Organized by Children’s Aid NYC, the impactful town hall is set to take place at P.S. 72 Lexington Academy (131 East 104th St.) from 5 to 7 p.m. this Friday.
Youth aged 12 and above, along with their parents from East Harlem and neighboring areas, are invited to engage in a crucial dialogue on the repercussions of gun violence on teens and explore potential solutions. The event will include a Q&A session with community leaders, providing a platform for open discussion.
Distinguished panelists include Omar Jackson, Chief Advocacy Officer of the recidivism reduction nonprofit Getting Out And Staying Out, and director of Stand Against Violence East Harlem; Pastor Isaac Scott, Director of Community Initiatives at Another Choice Youth and Family Outreach Inc.; and Chris Lawrence from Not Another Child.
This youth-driven initiative stems from a comprehensive study conducted over the summer by students at Children’s Aid’s East Harlem Center after-school program. Alarming findings indicated that 88% of shooting victims in East Harlem since 2002 were under 25 years old. Eager to create lasting change, the group presented their research to elected officials in Washington D.C. and is actively advocating for the passage of the School Anti-Violence Education Act at the state level.
