Cuban President Miguel Diáz-Canel paid tribute to Malcolm X and expressed support for the African diaspora during a visit to the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Center in Washington Heights on Monday, September 18th, 2023.
His visit coincided with the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
It symbolized the enduring connection between Cuba and Harlem, dating back to Fidel Castro’s visit in 1960 when they visited with each other at the Hotel Theresa on the corner of 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd, leading to his meeting with Malcolm X.
In his speech, President Diáz-Canel highlighted Malcolm X’s references to the Cuban Revolution in his speeches and praised his tireless advocacy for social justice and liberation movements in Africa.
The event was attended by Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, former New York City Councilman Charles Barron, and other dignitaries. President Diáz-Canel also unveiled a commemorative bronze plaque featuring Fidel Castro and Malcolm X’s faces, to be placed in the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, formerly the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem where Malcolm X was assassinated.
The Cuban President’s visit marks the beginning of a significant week, as he is scheduled to address the General Assembly and represent the Group of 77, a coalition of 135 developing nations primarily from the Global South. In this role, Diáz-Canel is expected to address the Assembly on its inaction regarding the climate crisis.
