Harlem Rep. Espaillat Responds To Trump No Longer COVID-19 Emergency Funding For NYC

September 22, 2020

Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat released the following statement following the Trump Administration’s decision to no longer providing COVID-19-related emergency funding for New York City’s prevention efforts:

These efforts, though costly, are critical to protecting the health of New Yorkers during this pandemic, which has already taken more than 200,000 lives,…

“Earlier this month, President Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) announced they would no longer reimburse New York City and other jurisdictions for preventive efforts to combat COVID-19, such as sanitizing schools and ensuring the cleanliness of public transportation. These efforts, though costly, are critical to protecting the health of New Yorkers during this pandemic, which has already taken more than 200,000 lives,” said Rep. Espaillat.

… with President Trump and Attorney General Barr’s asinine decision yesterday to categorize our city as an “anarchist jurisdiction,” billions more in federal funding hang in the balance when we are already facing a fiscal crisis from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Trump Administration’s failed response to contain it.

“Make no mistake, New York City is still at risk and the Trump Administration is playing politics with the health and safety of New York’s students, teachers, essential workers, and families. It could cost us an additional billion dollars, not to mention the loss of lives. Now, with President Trump and Attorney General Barr’s asinine decision yesterday to categorize our city as an “anarchist jurisdiction,” billions more in federal funding hang in the balance when we are already facing a fiscal crisis from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Trump Administration’s failed response to contain it.

“As New York City’s sole representative on the House of Representatives’ Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which has oversight of FEMA, I have asked Chairman Peter DeFazio to employ all of the instruments at the Committee’s disposal to investigate the genesis, potential political motivations, and internal deliberations leading up to the Trump Administration’s assault on New York City, including a public hearing with FEMA officials. In light of the threat posed to the safety of New York City’s residents, I am confident that the Committee will use its oversight powers to ensure that FEMA is not being used as a political tool of the president or his administration.”
