Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat was joined New York City leaders, immigration advocates, teachers and parents of students at Castle Bridge PS 153 to demand that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recognize sensitive location parameters near the school and other locations throughout the district.
“Considering our current political climate and policies being put forth by the Trump administration, immigrant communities are on edge,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “Recent actions, some that have even targeted one of my previous events, have been aggressive and have made communities feel less safe. We are standing united and speaking out to ensure immigrant families remain vigilant and feel safe when taking their kids to school, going to places of worship, or seeking critical public services or assistance throughout the community.”

“We are grateful to the parents and school administrative staff who acted quickly to ensure that the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) trucks were moved away from the school, so as not to cause panic amongst the families in their community. It is appalling that CBP parked outside of a school. Most people do not know the difference between CBP, which has no enforcement power here in NYC, and ICE. CBP’s thoughtless action could give parents the erroneous impression that schools in NYC are being targeted, and that they and their children are at risk for separation. No parent should fear sending their child to school,” said Kim Sykes, New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC).
