NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and the NYC Economic Development Corporation will be incorporating the work of an artist into the design of the proposed flood wall which will protect the hospital from future effects of sea-level rise. The goal is to select an artist to integrate their work into the design of the perimeter flood protection systems to help integrate the infrastructure into the community, create a vibrant design element and encourage communal activities and walkability in the neighborhood.
The selected artist(s) shall be reflective of the community and shall have experience working with design teams. The artist(s) shall be able to work to the scale of the project while maintaining a timeframe that supports the project schedule and allows for maximum artistic integration and design collaboration.
Artist Selection Process
The artist selection process will be an Invitational Competition for artists whose past work is compatible with the scale, location and materiality of this project. They are looking for artists who have experience collaborating on design teams and whose past work exhibits exemplary quality. Local, Regional, National and International artists may be considered.
Artist Selection Committee
The artist will be selected by an Artist Selection Committee. This committee will have a representative from NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, the NYC Economic Development Corporation, and the Department of Cultural Affairs. It will also include three representatives from the community. These community representatives could be public artists, critics, or art historians with visual art expertise, knowledge of living artists and artistic production and an ability to represent the community. We plan to select an artist by mid-November. Committee members will be required to attend three meetings.
