Walter’s World: Weekend Picks, Dance

The month of December “tis the season to see dance”. This weekend is an excellent opportunity to see dance both uptown and downtown. Here are a few of the many event taking place this weekend.

The Riverside Theatre NuDance 2011 will present six works by six emerging dance on Friday, December 9 and Saturday, December 10, 7:00 p.m. The theater is located at, 91 Claremont Ave. (bet. 120th & 122nd St.), Morningside Heights. NuDance 2011 are will feature innovative and cutting-edge performances by the next generation of pioneering dance artists including :

xodus dance collectiveWishing Well (World Premiere); Choreography: Karen Gayle. Strangers arrive at a Wishing Well, with hopes of fulfilling their secret fantasies.

NEVILLE Dance TheatreTerra Nova (excerpt): Shift; Choreography: Brenda Neville. The forces of mother earth come to life through this exploration the ecological phenomena of tectonic plate shifts.

Opus Dance Theatre Concerto Del Plata (A Work in Progress); Choreography: Pedro Ruiz. The work reflects a fusion of Spanish, Latin and Afro-Cuban dance styles, depicting a physical expression of emotions. This work expresses a moment in time—offering up through music and dance a spirit of expectant hope and joy.

Maverick Dance ExperienceIf You Knew Me…You Would (excerpt); Choreography: Toni Renee Johnson. Journey through a dynamic movement discourse and dance theater experience that unearths binding and affecting philosophical perspectives on relationships, solidarity, radicalism and institutionalization.

Dance Iquail! Equality for Us 2 (World Premiere); Choreography: Iquail Shaheed. A powerful duet that celebrates the recent success of the New York GLBT Community fight for marriage equality while showcases the dynamic ebb and flow inherent in these and all relationships.

Motivating ExcellenceInstinct: The Animal Within; Choreography: Rhapsody James. Journey to a world where the role of prey and predator are clearly defined. Explore with the dancers of Motivating Excellence as they redefine the word “beast” in today’s industry. Survival in this jungle is all about INSTINCT. The animal within.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues it’s five week season at The New York City Center located at 131 West 56th Street (between 6 and 7 Avenues). Tickets start at $25 can be purchased online at AlvinAiley.org or NYCityCenter.org, by telephone 212- 581- 1212 and at the box office. Performances include:

Friday December 9 8pm, –Minus 16 (Naharin) , Streams (Ailey), Journey (Trisler), Revelations (Ailey) The evening celebrates former Ailey dancer Mari Kajiwara

Saturday December 10 2pm, – Family Matinee featuring: Uptown (Rushing), Arden Court (Taylor), Love Stories (Jamison, Battle, Harris) Q & A with dancers following performance

Saturday December 10 8pm, Anointed (Huggins), In/Side (Battle), The Prodigal Prince (Holder) Revelations (Ailey) – with cast of 50

Sunday December 11 3pm, –All Ailey Program: Night Creature, Cry, Memoria, Revelations -with cast of 50

Sunday December 11 8pm, Memoria (Ailey), Minus 16 (Naharin), Takademe (Battle), Revelations (Ailey) Sylvia Waters Farewell
