New York State created the Excluded Workers Fund earlier this year, to address the fact that undocumented individuals were ineligible for the federal stimulus checks and other forms of COVID-related relief that have been critical to helping families survive.

NYS DOL, which is responsible for making awards from the fund, is working with trusted community-based organizations to connect with potential grant recipients – and here in East Harlem, they chose Union Settlement to fill this role.

In order to reach as many undocumented workers as possible Union Settlement will partner with other agencies in East Harlem and employ multi-lingual staff members to connect with those in need.

This is yet another example of government agencies turning to Union Settlement to connect with residents of East Harlem because they know we are respected and trusted by the community.

For example

New York City has reached out to us on several occasions this year to help set up “pop-up” COVID vaccination centers, and to connect with local residents and urge them to get vaccinated.

Last year, Union Settlement was selected by New York City to take the lead in conducting outreach and education efforts around the 2020 Census.

This has been a challenging year for everyone, but they are proud that our government partners continue to recognize and rely upon Union Settlement whenever needs arise here in East Harlem.
