The year 1889 was a time of steel, steam, and locomotives. It was also when Hamilton Carhartt & Company was founded by its namesake (known affectionately as “Ham”) and began producing overalls with two sewing machines and a half-horsepower electric motor in a small Detroit loft. Early failures led Hamilton to focus heavily on market research, and after talking directly with railroad workers, he designed a product that truly fit their needs. Under the motto, “Honest value for an honest dollar,” the Carhartt bib overall was created and rapidly evolved into the standard for quality workwear.

She earned the nickname “Bicycle Jin” as she biked to and from her clients’ apartments on her trusty 10-speed. Jin soon earned a loyal following as the go-to manicurist of top editors, photographers, designers and celebrities. Crowned the “Nail Guru” by The New York Times Magazine, Jin is best known for her ability to pinpoint current and emerging trends and translate them into the art of nail design. In 1999, she opened her first Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spa in the East Village. The success of the 300 square-foot spa led to two more locations: one in the West Village, where neighborhood regular Sarah Jessica Parker was the first client, and another on the Upper East Side. After much anticipation, Jin debuted her eponymous nail collection in 2012. The range of shades includes those named by models she regularly works with, and is 9/10-free (of harsh chemicals) and formulated with high-tech polymers and resins that ensure long wear and a shiny finish.

Founded in the 1920s by Jewish Polish World War I veteran Jacques Spreiregen, Kangol produced hats for workers, golfers, and especially soldiers. In 1938, Spreiregen, who was working in London as an importer, opened a factory at Cleator, Cumbria, England, which he ran with his nephew Joseph Meisner. A second factory was opened at nearby Frizington, and later, under the direction of Spreiregen’s younger nephew Sylvain Meisner, a third factory, manufacturing motorcycle helmets and seat belts in Carlisle. They were the major beret suppliers to the armed forces during World War II. During WWII, the signature Kangol beret was worn famously by British Field Marshal Montgomery. Mark Jacobs

From his first whimsical sketches, Marc Jacobs’s pencil has intuitively tapped the zeitgeist. In 1984, when he was still a design student, his oversize polka-dot sweaters swept up a batch of awards at Parsons School of Design. Within days, the Manhattan boutique Charivari had commissioned a set, and shortly after the ink dried on Jacobs’s diploma, he was offered his own label. But as the saying goes, nothing good ever comes easy. The next few years would test Jacobs in many ways. In 1992, he was gaining a toehold as the new head of the classic sportswear label Perry Ellis when he staged his infamous Grunge show. While many in the front row adored his upmarket take on garage-band chic—modeled with just the right slacker insouciance by Shalom Harlow and —his bosses, who promptly gave him the boot, did not. Jacobs’s streetwise aesthetic—in his words, “a little preppy, a little grungy, a little couture”—won him the hearts of hip chicks the world over, including Sofia Coppola, Winona Ryder, and Kate Moss. For 30 years, he has been building his brand of playful clothes and accessories.

Warby Parker

Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses. The eyewear industry is dominated by a single company that has been able to keep prices artificially high while reaping huge profits from consumers who have no other options. They started Warby Parker to create an alternative. By circumventing traditional channels, designing glasses in-house, and engaging with customers directly, we’re able to provide higher-quality, better-looking prescription eyewear at a fraction of the going price. They believe that buying glasses should be easy and fun. It should leave you happy and good-looking, with money in your pocket. They also believe that everyone has the right to see. Almost one billion people worldwide lack access to glasses, which means that 15% of the world’s population cannot effectively learn or work. To help address this problem, Warby Parker partners with non-profits like VisionSpring to ensure that for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need. There’s nothing complicated about it. Good eyewear, good outcome.
