Nadia Martinez has been shaped by three defining periods in her life – her childhood in the tiny village of Sinaloa, Mexico, her transition emigrating to the United States as a teenager, and her 11+ years as a Marine Corps spouse. Her business, Kallie & Co., reflects each of these defining moments. In 2014, in her own laundry room, Nadia created Kallie & Co. an online social retail business that sells handcrafted goods created by Mexican artisans. Nadia, a Mexican immigrant who married a US Marine, knew she needed a job that was “portable” because they relocated often. She also wanted to find a way to give back to her Mexican community by creating fair labor. After meeting artisans and sourcing products, Nadia needed a way to tell her story. She turned online to do so. Today, she online to reach customers who visit her website and she sells her products directly through Facebook Shops. These tools has resulted in 4 out of 5 customers finding Kallie & Co. through Facebook and Instagram. She uses WhatsApp to communicate with her artisans in Mexico, allowing them to avoid high phone bills. Founded in the 1920s by Jewish Polish World War I veteran Jacques Spreiregen, Kangol produced hats for workers, golfers, and especially soldiers. In 1938, Spreiregen, who was working in London as an importer, opened a factory at Cleator, Cumbria, England, which he ran with his nephew Joseph Meisner. A second factory was opened at nearby Frizington, and later, under the direction of Spreiregen’s younger nephew Sylvain Meisner, a third factory, manufacturing motorcycle helmets and seat belts in Carlisle. They were the major beret suppliers to the armed forces during World War II. During WWII, the signature Kangol beret was worn famously by British Field Marshal Montgomery. In the 1960s, designers Mary Quant and Pierre Cardin worked with the company, whose products graced the heads of the rich and famous, including the Beatles and Arnold Palmer, and later Diana, Princess of Wales. The company also supplied uniformed organizations such as the Scout Association. In the 1980s Kangol berets entered a new phase of fashion history with their adoption by members of the hip-hop leaders, legends and trailblazers from Harlem to Hollywood like Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Kangol Kid of UTFO, The Notorious B.I.G, Samuel L. The Frye Company is a manufacturer of shoes, boots and leather accessories. Founded in 1863, it claims to be the oldest continuously operated American shoe company however, Johnston and Murphy began operations in 1850. Frye currently produces mostly in Mexico and China. In 1863, John A. Frye opened the first Frye shop on Elm Street in Marlboro, Massachusetts.
