In the past we’ve posted many editorials about Harlem’s Madame St. Clair, aka Stephanie St. Clair, and Queenie, but rarely do we have a photograph (like the one above) that gives us an intimate up close – personal view of legendary Ms. St. Clair, 1920s – 1940s.

St. Clair, of French and African descent, lived the American dream, she immigrated to the United States from Martinique in 1912, ten years later took $10,000 of her own money and set up a numbers bank in Harlem, and became the number one bookmaker in Harlem.
