March 4, 2019

Building on the success of NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47’s popular Weather Kids (Niños del Tiempo in Spanish) classroom-based weather education program, both stations joined today with presenting sponsor Raymour & Flanigan.

They come together to announce the “Weather Kids Star Teacher Awards,” recognizing top elementary and secondary science, technology, engineering and math (S.T.E.M) teachers from Harlem to Hollis. Visit nbcnewyork.com/weatherkids or telemundo47.com/ninosdeltiempo for full contest rules and to cast your nomination through Friday, March 22, 2019.

“Celebrating the accomplishments of great teachers and cultivating life-long interest in the sciences are important community priorities for WNBC. This is why we are expanding our popular Weather Kids education program to recognize the achievements of S.T.E.M teachers, both inside and outside of the classroom. We are excited to take our Weather Kids program to the next level and look forward to awarding our new ‘Star Teachers’ this May,” said Eric Lerner, President and General Manager of NBC 4 New York.

The new “Weather Kids Star Teacher Awards” continues NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47’s focus on S.T.E.M. proficiency and cultivating a new generation of leaders in and out of the classroom. It also reflects an expansion of both station’s successful Weather Kids classroom program, which augments existing science and technology instruction for students in grades 3 through 5, while delivering a “real world” look at weather forecasting led by NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47 meteorologists and weather experts. To date, weather experts from both stations made 31 separate visits across the region, visiting classrooms and museums in 12 Tri-State counties. More than 2,000 students have participated in the program during this time.

“At Telemundo 47, our award-winning La Autoridad en El Tiempo weather team knows that severe weather impacts all of us, regardless of where we live and what language we speak. They are passionate about keeping viewers safe and informed, and are deeply committed to our local students, their teachers and their schools. We are excited to launch the next phase of our popular Niños del Tiempo program and look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of ‘Star Teachers” across the region,” said Cristina Schwarz, President and General Manager of Telemundo 47.

When casting their on-line nomination, individuals will have the opportunity to list the many reasons why a specific science, technology, engineering or math teachers is deserving of the honor. Three Tri-State teachers will be chosen to receive the Weather Kids Star Teacher Awards. Each will receive a visit from Storm Team 4 and La Autoridad En El Tiempo representatives this May.

In addition to commemorative plaques for the winning teacher and their school, NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47 will donate $1,000 to the school of each winning teacher, benefitting the learning needs of the winning teacher’s students. Thanks to the generosity of “Weather Kids Star Teacher Awards” presenting sponsor Raymour & Flanigan (which has a location in Harlem), a surprise gift will also be made benefitting the classroom and school of the winning teacher.
