New Harlem Studios, Less Space, Shared Bathrooms

January 18, 2014

Harlem Micro BeforeBigger is sometimes better, but not when it comes to New York City’s micro-unit craze. Industrious brothers Seth and Matthew Weissman of Weissman Equities are among those joining the posse of small space-innovators. With their PAD project, New York Magazine‘s Wendy Goodman reports, the brothers have converted five of the 20 apartments at 2299 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard near 135th Street into apartments of the 175- to 225-square-foot variety. These five renovated units come partially furnished with that mainstay of micro-apartments, a Murphy bed, which doubles as a couch, and a table that expands to seat six.

Harlem Micro Unit After-thumbThese highly practical single-room studios save in both square footage and rent by compromising just one thing: a private bathroom. The five dwellings share two-and-a-half bathrooms, which will be professionally cleaned three times a week. With a rental price of $1,250 to $1,600 per month with utilities included, are the communal facilities worth it? If so, they’re available for lease now (source).
