In light of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) recent decision to pass the resolution Support Decarbonization of Public Schools, Colleges, Universities, and Hospitals.
Incluging, City Buildings Through Inflation Reduction Act Funds, which recognizes the importance of providing young people robust climate change and climate justice education to public school students across the country, New York Sun Works Executive Director Manuela Zamora issued the following statement:
“I applaud the American Federation of Teachers for recognizing climate change as the most existential crisis of our time and committing its educators to support efforts to bring interdisciplinary climate-change and climate-justice curricula to help prepare students for a rapidly changing world and sustainable, green jobs.
“For 20 years, New York Sun Works has been at the forefront of bringing critical urban agriculture and climate education to tens of thousands of students through hydroponic technology, cultivating the next generation of scientists, urban farmers and climate activists. We are grateful to have a crucial ally and supporter in our efforts to provide high-quality, climate and environmental science education to public school students.
“This recognition is indicative that a paradigm shift is happening as organizations and industries are recognizing climate education as the future of science education. NY Sun Works is a not-for-profit organization that builds Hydroponic Classrooms in city schools to teach the science of sustainability through urban farming. Through our comprehensive curriculum, we engage K-12th grade students and educators in hands-on, standards-based sustainability and climate education.
