Good or bad, the internet is our go-to resource for pretty much everything, including health concerns.
A recent study by ProTrainings, a company offering free online health and safety courses, dove into what Americans are searching for related to heart health.
States on High Alert
The study looked at Google search trends alongside CDC data to pinpoint areas most focused on heart health. Interestingly, “hypertension” topped the searches in Southern states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida, suggesting a regional concern for high blood pressure. Stroke worries were high in states like Oregon and New York, while “heart disease” searches were more spread out, with Nevada and New Hampshire leading the pack.
Prevention is Key
“Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the US,” says Tyler Accardi, marketing director at ProTrainings. He emphasizes the importance of preventive measures like exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking.
Sifting Through the Noise
While online health searches are common, it’s crucial to prioritize reliable information. Accardi suggests using Google proactively, not reactively to quell anxieties. Consulting a doctor is always best for specific concerns, but online resources can empower you with general knowledge.
Look for websites with “.edu,” “.gov,” or “.org” in the URL, as these often signify educational institutions, government bodies, or non-profits. Reputable organizations like the Mayo Clinic or the American Heart Association are great sources of evidence-based information.
Remember: Don’t replace professional medical advice with online searches. Consult your doctor for personalized guidance and maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep your heart happy.
