Harlem Basketball Legends Distribute Groceries During Food Hardship At Rucker Park

September 21, 2020

In renowned Rucker Park, playground legends Joe Hammond, Freddie Crawford, and Bob McCullough joined Friends of Public School Harlem (FPSH) and local elected officials to distribute boxes of food to Harlem families.

More than 300 families received food boxes made possible by special grants from Robin Hood and the Migdol Family Foundation.

According to Robin Hood’s Poverty Tracker, food hardship has disproportionately impacted people of color. More than two-thirds (67 percent) of Hispanic and Black survey respondents who lost work since the COVID-19 outbreak are experiencing food hardship.

It has a particularly devastating impact on children – including increasing suffering from chronic health conditions like asthma, becoming more likely to experience depression, and facing difficulty performing well at school or concentrating remotely.

“The pandemic has worsened food insecurity across New York, but especially in neighborhoods like Harlem,” said FPSH founder Jerry Migdol. “We thank these great Harlem legends, the elected officials, and community leaders for joining with us to provide help for families today.”

Participating in the food giveaway were Congressman Adriano Espaillat, Assemblyman Al Taylor, City Councilman Bill Perkins, District Leader Keith Lilly, and Korey Wise.

Assemblyman Al Taylor added, “”Our communities have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our neighbors have lost their jobs and are struggling to feed their families. I thank Friends of Public School Harlem, the Migdol Family Foundation, and Robin Hood for their efforts today to help our families.”
