History

HWM finds its roots in the legacy of founder and visual artist Danny Tisdale

Harlem World Magazine captures the people, places, and ideas that define Harlem culture. From the arts and business to health and style, to politics and travel, and food.

Capture the culture and meet our readers at all intersections of process and influence, from Harlem to Hollis, to Hollywood, and to Harare.

HWM finds its roots in the legacy of Daniel Tisdale’s uncle, Charles Wesley Tisdale, the renowned owner and publisher of Jackson Advocate newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi. Charles Tisdale, a man with a family of eighteen siblings driven by a belief in the power of informative newspapers, made it his mission to champion civil rights, amplify the voices of the less fortunate, and expose corruption (NPR Radio, Charles Evers). His commitment to the welfare of all citizens, transcending racial boundaries, garnered admiration and respect from figures such as civil rights activist Charles Evers and Ben Jealous, former NAACP president.

HWM stands as a testament to this unwavering dedication, proudly carrying the torch and delivering an extraordinary publication that resonates with its readers and drives demand for the brand.
