Man Gets 52 Years To Life For Targeting Women In Harlem

January 5, 2017

NY Daily News reports that a 57-year-old career criminal was sentenced to up to life in prison Thursday for a twisted night of violent attacks on women in Harlem.

Edward Major was convicted at trial in November of robbery, burglary, assault and attempted assault for pummeling three women in less than two hours on April 1, 2015.

Major first attacked a 34-year-old passerby on the street, punching her in the face and knocking her to the ground around 7:45 p.m., prosecutors said.

Less than an hour later, he followed another victim, 59, into her apartment lobby on St. Nicholas Avenue and repeatedly punched her, swiping her backpack before fleeing.

The third victim, a 45-year-old woman, was found 10 minutes after the second assault on W. 112th St. She sustained a broken nose when Major punched her and kicked her after she’d fallen to the ground, prosecutors said.

In a statement read in court, the first of his targets described how the incident traumatized her.

“I would be comforted somewhat knowing that this man, Edward Major, is sentenced to the maximum time in prison,” she said in a statement read by prosecutor Philip Gary.

“I’d be comforted knowing that he will not be released until he is too old and frail to ever assault another innocent person again,” the statement continued.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro handed down 52 years to life in prison.
