Harlem Schools Summit, Advocacy In Action & Harlem Schools District 3 Equity Fund Fundraiser

March 26, 2018

Dear fellow families and community members,

I am part of the committee and I have been asked to share the below information. Please support and circulate as the one major way to change outcomes is through grassroots efforts.

We are writing to invite you to attend the Harlem Schools Summit on Saturday, April 14th at PS/IS 180 in Harlem. In 2017, the District 3 Community Education Council (CEC3) successfully convened over 100 community members, parents, elected officials, and educators for the inaugural Harlem School Summit. The Summit was an opportunity to inform stakeholders of the numerous challenges creating low student enrollment and funding cuts in the District 3 portion of Harlem (Central Park North to 122nd Street, Morningside Park to Fifth Avenue) and collectively brainstorm solutions. The success of the event demonstrated our collective power to transform our schools and served as the catalyst for change throughout the district.

Our charge for this year’s summit is Advocacy in Action: A collaborative approach to revitalizing District 3 Schools! This year we will continue to provide targeted workshops to promote fruitful discourse among educational advocates, school administrators, parents, and other stakeholders as we all fight to protect public education in the United States.

Immediately following the Summit we invite you to join us at UnderBar for a fundraiser to suppport the District 3 Equity Fund. The Fund is a new initiative established by the Equity and Excellence Committee to create a more equitable district where every school can succeed. We are seeking support from all parents, community members and business leaders to become champions for equitable education by providing schools with limited resources access to supplemental funds for school programming and support. All donations for the District 3 Equity Fund are tax-deductible and will be managed by the Equity and Excellence Committee.

We hope you will join us at both the Harlem Schools Summit and Reception as we strive to continue to cultivate dynamic schools in District 3 Harlem. The fliers and links for both events can be found below. Please feel free to email us at HarlemSchoolSummit@gmail.com if you have any questions about either the Summit or the Reception.

Best,

Genisha Metcalf and Dennis Morgan

Chairs, District 3 CEC Equity and Excellence Committee
